Remembering Dr. Jack McCleary

I don't usually begin with unfortunatenews but wanted to share that Dr. Jack McCleary, passed away on September 22. He was 91 years old. Dr. McCleary was a dermatologist who helped thousands of patients over the more than 60 years in practice serving the Sherman Oaks community and was respected and beloved by patients and peers. He was president of both CMA and LACMA.

Born in Adel, Iowa, he earned a BA and MD at Stanford University and an MS at the University of Minnesota. He completed a fellowship in dermatology at the Mayo Clinic and was a naval officer during the Korean War. In 1998 he was presented with a lifetime achievement award by the Stanford Medical Alumni Association. Dr. McCleary and his wife of 68 years, Marian Bollier McCleary, were residents of Hidden Hills. They are survived by their three daughters, Kimberly McCleary Blue, Carol McCleary andRobin McCleary, and their four grandchildren.

On behalf of the LACMA and CMA organizations, our thoughts and prayers are with Dr. McCleary's family, patients, colleagues andfriends.

Prop56 Implementation: What Physicians Need to Know about the Supplemental Payments

As most of you know by now, The California Health Care, Research and Prevention Tobacco Tax Act of 2016 (Prop. 56) created new revenues dedicated to the Medi-Cal program. Physicians receive supplemental payments in both fee-for-service and Medi-Cal managed care when providing Medi-Cal services under certain CPT codes.

The California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS), will discuss the status of distribution of both 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 funds and their distribution timelines on Wednesday, November 7th during an informative webinar that will also cover eligible services, supplemental payment amounts by CPT code and tips on ensuring your practice receives the full amount of eligible funds. It will also provide information on how to file grievances on Prop. 56 funds and how the California Medical Association (CMA) can help.

Those members impacted, or if you simply want to be aware of payment information, should take advantage of the November 7th webinar.

Webinar Time: 12:15 PM - 1:15 PM

Webinar Notice: Please register at least one hour before the webinar. If you do not register an hour before the webinar start time, we cannot guarantee your attendance. Questions: 800-786-4CMA (4262).

Your Vote Counts!
Election day is November 6th and just a few days away. It's time to show up to the polls (or mail in that vote-by-mail ballot) and ensure that the voice of physicians and patients are heard loud and clear at the ballot box.

If you vote by mail (also known as "absentee"), your ballot must be postmarked on or before Election Day and received by your county elections office no later than 3 days after Election Day. If you are not sure your vote-by-mail ballot will arrive in time if mailed, you—or your authorized representative—can bring it to your local polling place between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Election Day. If you need to look up your polling place, please click here.

Why do we vote on a Tuesday? Before 1845, we were more of an agricultural society and November was considered a good time for elections because the busy harvest season was coming to a close. Many folks had to travel quite a long way to get to a polling station, so it made sense to hold elections on a Tuesday. This avoided religious holidays as well.

By an act of Congress on January 23, 1845, the first Tuesday following the first Monday in November was designated Election Day for future presidential elections. The first such election took place on November 7, 1848. Whig Party candidate Zachary Taylor won out over Democrat Lewis Cass and Free-Soil candidate (and former president) Martin Van Buren. Taylor's running mate was Millard Fillmore, who became the nation's 13th president on July 10, 1850, upon Taylor's untimely death.

LACMA's Patient Care Foundation Annual Los Angeles Healthcare Awards

November is also the month the Patient Care Foundation (yes, part of LACMA), hosts the annual Los Angeles Healthcare Awards gala. This year the event will be held on November 30th at the Four Seasons Los Angeles at Beverly Hills.

I hope you can join us for an extraordinary celebration of individuals and institutions who have positively impacted healthcare delivery in their local communities.

The funds raised will benefit crucial medical student programs at the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science.
