For some time, LACMA has been in productive discussions with physician leaders from Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital. The facility has gone through a massive transformation and now is a state-of-the-art medical campus serving the South Central Los Angeles area. The challenge for MLKCH is how to attract medical providers to serve the needs of an incredibly diverse population in a culturally competent way. LACMA is now entering a five-year partnership with MLKCH to help them recruit physicians, retain them and help them to thrive in medicine. At the same time, MLKCH will sponsor membership for faculty, clinical and administrative physicians through 2023. Assemblyman Mike Gipson, representing the 64th Assembly District, has also pledged his support for the partnership and will undoubtedly join us for the historic and timely membership kick off event. The Dangers of Vaping On the public health front, LACMA is hosting a conference call in early February with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, County Supervisor staff, the Los Angeles County Pediatric Association and other key stakeholders to discuss the public health epidemic impacting adolescents known as vaping. The goal of these discussions is to assess what is working and how we can engage other groups and medical providers to bring awareness to the problem as more vaping retail outlets open near schools and parks. Annual Psychiatric Education and Research Foundation Event I want to recognize Dr. Maria Lymberis for her work in the field of psychiatry and supporting patients and providers through collaboration, networking and sharing. The Psychiatric Education and Research Foundation (PER) was established in January of 1990 to promote the goals of the Southern California Psychiatric Society and its member psychiatrists. Specifically, PER aims to foster the active participation of psychiatrists in our community to improve psychiatric care, increase access to treatment and fight against the destructive effects of stigma and discrimination of persons suffering from psychiatric problems through education and research. Every year, at its annual event, PER gives the PER Advocate Award to someone who has exemplified its mission. Past awardees include the Honorable Edward Edelman, NAMI leader Sharon Dunas, Commissioner Laurie Hymowitz and other distinguished mental health champions.
