Dr. Simone Gold Sentenced

America's Frontline Doctors (AFLD) founder Simone Gold, MD, JD, was sentenced Thursday to serve 60 days in prison followed by 1 year of supervised release for her participation in last year's January 6 insurrection in which she trespassed and refused to leave the U.S. Capitol building.

She also must pay a fine of $9,500 and another $500 to the Capitol architect to compensate for the damage the rioters did to the building. Click here to read the complete story.

US Senate Closer to Gun Violence Legislation

A tentative deal in the Senate that would toughen federal gun laws and provide billions of dollars in new money to prevent future mass shootings moved closer to reality Tuesday after negotiators settled key disagreements that had delayed the drafting of a bill, putting it on a glide path to be passed into law by the end of the month. The breakthrough came more than a week after 20 senators — 10 from each party — signed on to a framework agreement that coupled modest new gun restrictions with some $15 billion in new federal funding for mental health programs and school security upgrades.

While agreement from 10 Republican senators on a deal in principle was a clear breakthrough, signaling there could be enough GOP support to beat a Senate filibuster, it did not guarantee that the negotiators would succeed in translating those elements into final text. But with the key disputes resolved, people involved in the negotiations said the text of the bill is set to be released as soon as Tuesday afternoon, with an initial Senate procedural vote coming just hours afterward.

Medical Board of California Guidelines for Prescribing Controlled Substances

The Medical Board of California is updating the 2014 Guidelines for Prescribing Controlled Substances for Pain. The Board appointed a Prescribing Guidelines Task Force to coordinate this project. In addition, a panel of subject matter experts was assembled to identify where revisions or updates to the guidelines were necessary. The updated guidelines have been drafted and are being distributed to physician organizations/groups and patient/consumer groups for review/comment.

The Board is seeking feedback to identify any specific areas of concern for physicians treating patients for pain and to ensure that the updated guidelines do not unintentionally impact a physicians’ ability to provide appropriate care to patients.

Interested parties are encouraged to submit written comments on the updated guidelines in advance of the Interested Parties meeting which has been scheduled for July 14, 2022. I have included a link to both the agenda for this meeting and the drafted guidelines which are labeled Agenda Item 4 in the Materials section. Page 2 of the agenda provides information on how and where to submit written comments, if so desired.
