Dr. Diana Shiba is President-Elect of the Los Angeles County Medical Association (LACMA), and will be the first Asian-American female elected to this role in LACMA’s nearly 150-year history. Dr. Shiba is the Chief Government Relations Officer and a Regional Assistant Medical Director for the Southern California Permanente Medical Group, Kaiser Permanente. She has been advocating for physicians and patients for the last 15 years, and has been active in county, state, and national medical organizations, as well as in her own specialty, Ophthalmology. She currently serves on the Board of Trustees of the California Medical Association, the Executive Committee of the Los Angeles County Medical Association, the Executive Committee of America’s Physician Groups, the Board of Directors of the California Academy of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, and is an established leader and past Committee Chair with the American Academy of Ophthalmology. In the past, she has also served on the Board of Directors of the San Diego County Medical Society and is a past elected Vice-Speaker of a 30,000-member section of the American Medical Association. She attended Georgetown University where she graduated summa cum laude and was a Rhodes Scholar state finalist. She completed her medical education at the University of California, Davis, and Ophthalmology residency at the University of California, San Diego. She has taught several courses on physician leadership development and is a recipient of the annual clinical teaching award in Ophthalmology from the University of California, San Diego. Dr. Shiba has received numerous awards for her advocacy work, including the Secretariat Award in Advocacy from the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the prestigious Excellence in Leadership Award from the American Medical Association Foundation. Dr. Shiba conducts oral examinations and participates in exam development with the American Board of Ophthalmology and teaches advanced cataract surgical courses with the University of California, Los Angeles. In her spare time, she enjoys grilling, gourmet cooking, skiing, and spending time with her 7-year old twins – who enjoy their trips to Sacramento and Washington, D.C. with their Mom.
