The LACMA ensures local physicians have
a voice in shaping healthcare policy

Docs4LA

Docs4LA

“I am very excited to lead the Docs4LA initiative which will provide the impetus for our organization to be a leader and policy partner on issues that we have not always traditionally weighed in on, but are some of the most significant issues effecting the people of Los Angeles county. These issues include housing, homelessness, vaping, transportation, the environment, and gun violence.

Through Docs4LA we will look to be leaders and partners on other topical issues that affect the healthcare outcomes of our patients. Through Docs4LA, LACMA physicians will be part of the solution, because as physicians we are not solely healers, we must be community leaders as well. We will address issues that impact our own lives, as well as the healthcare outcomes of our patients in this highly populated, vibrant, and complex county. Through Docs 4 LA, we will look to help our public servants develop policies that help our housing and transportation crisis, find solutions to environmental issues, and help address gun violence. When policymakers look to find community leaders to help lead and build coalitions, we want them to think of LACMA.”

Docs4LA will provide the impetus for LACMA to be a leader and policy partner on issues that we have not always traditionally weighed in on, but are some of the most significant issues effecting the people of Los Angeles county. These issues include housing, homelessness, transportation, the environment, and gun violence.

LACMA will certainly continue to advocate on the public health and healthcare delivery issues that we have always championed, but through Docs4LA we will look to be leaders and partners on other topical issues that affect the healthcare outcomes of our patients. Additionally, LACMA will be recommitted to our history of service through events like Walk with a Doc and other community service events. When policymakers look to find community leaders to help lead and build coalitions, we want them to think of LACMA. Through public policy and community service, Docs4LA will make a positive impact on our members, county, and our patients.

With partnership as the motivating force, 6 areas will be the priority domains in 2019:

Homelessness as a public health issue

D4LA will be a powerful force to educate, mobilize, raise awareness for, financially support and advocate for and with civic and public institutions focused on change.

Gun Violence

At epidemic levels across the country, state and regionally.  Docs4LA will be in conversations to elevate the dialogue, inspire new ideas, support those organizations fighting for sensible policy while having the provider voice be heard since it’s the medical professionals who not only treat the wounds but also, often, carry the scars and thus manage burnout at higher levels than any other profession.

Climate Change Impacts on Communities of Color

Climate change is real.  That said, from soil to air, the human caused effects of climate change have dire consequences for those living in or near poverty.  Docs4LA will supports those organizations which advocate for low income communities facing real challenges as a result of dramatic shifts in the environment.

Environmental Responsibility

Docs4LA will join other groups to hold organizations accountable relative to environmental responsibility; from oil drilling in neighborhoods to battery dumping prevention.

Workforce for the Future

Docs4LA will partner with other organizations to ensure medical providers are prepared and supported so they in turn can be the physicians for the future as many communities (South Central LA for example) face physician shortages.

Hit and Run Fatalities

A second, preventable epidemic in the region.  D4LA will partner with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health and their Division of Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention and the innovative “Vision One” campaign to reduce or eliminate hit and run accidents in the County. Most of these tragic events happen, usually, on the same roadways, neighborhoods and areas that already lack adequate signs and signals.  The consequences are severe with increasing injuries and fatalities.  Docs4LA can help convent hospitals, government, victims, transportation advocates and policy makers to create change.

Impact thru Partnership

In 2019, Docs4LA will partner with major healthcare organizations: from Cedars Sinai to Susan G. Komen and American Heart and many more events. Physicians now have a unifying theme to support what matters to them and where they want to make the most impact.
