9th Annual L.A. Healthcare Awards

Thank you to Dr. Troy Elander for his leadership, sponsors such as Cooperative of American Physicians, Wells Fargo, Blue Shield, Charles R. Drew University, Facey Medical Group, L.A. Care, Mercer, Kedren Health and Clínica Oscar Romero for helping us raise nearly $80,000 for medical student scholarships. Without the support from these organizations and the herculean efforts of Lisa Le and staff, this event would not be possible.

Vaccine Update

More than half of California adults have received at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccination, and nearly a third are fully vaccinated, according to the state’s health agency.

The California Department of Public Health’s most recent data shows 10.1 million people, 31.4% of the adult population, are fully vaccinated. Another 6.5 million have received one shot of the two-dose Pfizer or Moderna vaccines. Johnson & Johnson vaccines — the use of which was recently paused in California due to an extremely rare blood clotting issue experienced in six patients out of more than 7 million — only requires one shot. The number of partially vaccinated adults in California still awaiting their second shot accounts for 20.1% of the total adult population. Combined, that means 51.5% of California adults have gotten at least one shot.

California’s progress in rolling out the vaccine is roughly in line with national trends. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced on Sunday that 50.4% of all adults in the country have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, while 32.5% are fully vaccinated. Another 17.9% of Americans are still waiting to get their second shot.

Johnson and Johnson Vaccine Update

Emergent BioSolutions has shut down new manufacturing of Johnson & Johnson’s coronavirus vaccine at its Baltimore plant at the request of the Food and Drug Administration after an inspection of the troubled facility last week, Emergent said Monday. The halt in production is another setback for Johnson & Johnson as it attempts to meet its promise to deliver nearly 100 million doses of vaccine to the U.S. government by the end of May.

The Centers for Disease Control Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) will hold an emergency Webcast on April 23, 2021, from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Cal-HOP Funding for Practices

LACMA members can get funding through the federal/state-funded Cal-HOP program (click here).

The Cal-HOP program helps practices onboard to Health Information Exchanges/Organizations (HIE/HIO), helping to get rid of the obstacle of paying for the interface between their EHR and the HIE. The funding expires in September 2021, so it’s essential that they join LANES, our local HIE partners, to take advantage of this opportunity.

For practices participating in pay-for-performance or who have quality reporting needs this is critical infrastructure to make sure that PCPs get the ER/hospital notifications for the patients that are really theirs – and for routine access to labs/studies and notes from other systems. HIEs allow care teams to securely access and share a patient’s full health history from across EHRs, hospitals, health plans, pharmacies, and other health entities. By joining an HIE, practices can also save time, improve care coordination, and earn more in incentives and payments.

For more information contact our LANES partner, Brad Hibbard, Vice President of Sales and Marketing LANES at 949-633-3900.
