What Steps Can We Take to Alleviate Physician Burnout?

This week, we're continuing our look at the issue of physician burnout and how we can assist in alleviating the pressures that doctors face in their work life. There will be two extraordinary events this summer that feature panels and solutions that I will share as well. In recent news, the World Health Organization recognized the serious effects of burnout from chronic workplace stress, while asserting that burnout levels among doctors are at new highs, far worse than among the general population. This op-ed article featured in the New York Times dives into what steps the health care system may need to take to restructure a system that exploits caregivers. Let me know your thoughts about the opinions expressed in the article.

Adjustment to HIPAA Data Breach Penalties

The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced that it's adjusting the way it penalizes violations of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) by shifting its focus to health firms' "level of culpability." Organizations that took necessary measures to comply with HIPAA but were still breached will be hit with smaller fines than those that knowingly violated HIPAA. Learn more about what these adjustments could mean for your practice via this article by one of our Preferred Partners, LibertyID. In the meantime, if you or your private practice are in need of an identity theft protection program, LibertyID provides one of the most comprehensive and affordable identity theft protection programs available today. They have dedicated recovery specialists to work on victims’ behalf with entities involved to dispute and resolve issues that can impact a medical practice for years.

Our Partnership With Avery Healthcare Appraisal, Inc.

Some doctors might find it difficult to understand healthcare valuations and related healthcare compliance issues, but our new addition to our Preferred Partner Program, Avery Healthcare Appraisal, can help!

Ken Avery, the founder of Avery Healthcare Appraisal, has been providing practice valuations and consulting services for healthcare clients nationwide since 2011.

Avery Healthcare Appraisal has prepared hundreds of valuations nationwide of medical practices including equipment and furniture valuations, surgery centers, imaging centers, endoscopy centers, dialysis centers and hospitals.

They also assist physicians in buying and selling their practices, in compensation issues, and in recruiting, admitting and retiring partners.

4 Steps to Access Our Marketplace Vendors and Products

Put in your access code: LAMKPL0519 Step One: Sign up and create your login credentials. Step Two: A welcome email is immediately sent to you welcoming you to the LACMA Marketplace program. Step Three: An email is sent out following the sign up from the implementation team requesting your vendors and account numbers. This email explains that it can take anywhere from 48 hours and up to 30 days from the time you receive the vendor account numbers. Here is what was sent out recently: Welcome to the LACMA Marketplace. Over the next few days, we will be creating and aligning all of your practice’s vendor agreements with the LACMA portfolio of contracts. I will continue to keep you informed as to when each contract becomes linked and your practice can begin purchasing products based on the new discounts. Please be patient as this process can take as little as 48 hours and up to 30 days depending on the individual vendor. Once again, thank you for joining the LACMA Marketplace. Step Four: As explained in the email, as the contracts become aligned, the products based on those contracts become available to you in the LACMA Marketplace. Although we do our very best to make sure the items are available in the marketplace as soon as possible, we are completely at the mercy of the vendors, manufacturers, and GPO as to the exact time each individual practice’s contract becomes available. Gustavo Friederichsen Chief Executive Officer Los Angeles County Medical Association “If it matters to our LACMA members, it matters to me.”
