11th Hour Call to Arms

The Patient Care Foundation annual Los Angeles Healthcare Awards dinner is November 8th to benefit needy medical students and while the fundraising has been brisk as we recognize perhaps the most diverse group of honorees ever including Cedars Sinai, Venice Family Clinics, Skid Row Housing Trust and Los Angeles Rams to name a few, ticket sales have been sluggish.

I’m personally asking members to join your colleagues for one night of celebration, of camaraderie, to impact medical students who face incredible obstacles.

Tickets are $325 each and a table of ten is $3,000 with plenty still available.

House of Delegates is Here

The 148th Annual Session of CMA’s House of Delegates (HOD) will tackle four major issues when it convenes later this week in Anaheim.

CMA physician delegates meet annually to establish a broad policy on current major issues that have been determined to be the most important issues affecting members, the association and the practice of medicine. This year’s major issues are:

Augmented Intelligence: Technology continues to transform the way physicians serve patients, creating opportunities and exposing challenges that prevent quality, timely and affordable care. While CMA has adopted policies addressing telemedicine, electronic health records, and interoperability, it’s time to explore pragmatic solutions that address medical decision-making, new liabilities and privacy concerns inherent with augmented and artificial intelligence. With few laws and regulations on the books, CMA needs to proactively develop a new policy that keeps physicians at the center of health care delivery.

Cannabis: CMA has adopted extensive policies concerning cannabis use and regulation, including our 2011 white paper, “Cannabis and the Regulatory Void.” As the state’s legal cannabis industry continues to grow and evolve, CMA must continue to weigh in on pressing issues, including health impacts associated with cannabis use, public health protections, federal legalization, data and surveillance efforts, high-quality research, marketing and advertising practices, cannabis equity programs and more.

Homelessness: Physicians witness the homelessness crisis in emergency rooms, clinics and on the streets of our communities. The multi-faceted challenges of housing, case management, intervention programs, and public health considerations require California’s physicians to weigh in on evidence-based solutions that address the health care and social needs of those at risk of or experiencing homelessness.

Adverse Childhood Experiences: When it comes to trauma-informed care, CMA supports efforts for data collection, research, and evaluation of screening for Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), recognizing there is a growing need to increase familiarity on the what, when and how to incorporate ACE screening practices into routine care. California physicians need tools, resources, and funding to address their patients’ cumulative ACEs, which has a strong correlation to numerous health, social and behavioral problems throughout their lives.

I want to thank Dr. Kian Karimi, District 5 President for hosting what will be an informative dinner next Tuesday, October 29th at the DoubleTree Hilton in Santa Monica. Our tax advisors, ACap Advisors & Accountants CEO Ara Oghoorian, CFA, CFP, CP, will present on the new tax law and how it affects practices.

As of today, we have 20 RSVPs but there is plenty of room for more! This will be a great opportunity to network with other physicians and learn at the same time!

Continuing medical education (CME) is also offered at no cost. For additional information contact cfrable@mednet.ucla.edu or call 310-794-8127. Promoting your practice effectively in 2019: How to capitalize on the consumerization of healthcare

Three in four people have gone online to find out about a doctor or dentist, and more than 57 percent do so regularly. Attracting and retaining patients in this environment requires improving each digital touchpoint for patients, both before and after their visit.

Join LACMA and PatientPop in this webinar replay to learn how technology can create a better experience across the patient journey, and how every practice can benefit along the way.
