Governor Newsom Names New Surgeon General

Former Orange County Medical Association president Dr. Diana Ramos was appointed California’s Surgeon General last week. Dr. Ramos, adjunct assistant clinical professor atUSC’s Keck School of Medicine, was the first Latinx woman and public health physician to hold the position of president of OCMA. Dr. Ramos has more than three decades of cross-cutting experience and expertise with a focus on health equity and reproductive health. She currently serves at the California Department of Public Health’s Center for Healthy Communities, where she oversees the state’s public health and prevention programs.

The Governor established the role of Surgeon General in 2019 on his first day in office as part of a series of major health care proposals and actions. The California Surgeon General is a key spokesperson on public health issues throughout the state and advises the Governor on efforts to address health risks and challenges as effectively and as early as possible.

Is Illegal Street Racing a Public Health Crisis?

Numerous injuries, gun violence, and a threat to public safety -- the success of the "Fast and the Furious" franchise has increased hospitalizations and deaths. One neighborhood is rallying against the filming of "Fast X," the 10th installment in the franchise, which residents say glamorizes street racing and illegal takeovers. Should physicians get involved? Let me know what you think.
