A Message from our President Dr. Jeffery Lee With the end of 2021 coming and the holidays upon us, it is understandable to be reflective of the year. It has been a long year; it has been a hard year. It's been a year with some small fires that were snuffed out. We have lost many loved ones. But it is also now a time to be thankful for all that we have, to be generous with our time and resources, and to look forward to a New Year. It is good to show love to family and friends and bestow kindness to strangers. Doctors, maybe more than any other profession, are positioned to deliver that caring – to our patients, to our staff, and to each other. I have strong optimism for what 2022 will bring for the people and physicians of LA. 2021 was a hard year, but better days are to come – and LACMA will do our best to contribute to that with your help. COVID-19 Update Another grim milestone: COVID-19 deaths reached 800,000 in the U.S and the U.S. count passed 50 million coronavirus cases as of Sunday. The unofficial U.S. COVID-19 toll from Johns Hopkins University as of Monday at 8 a.m. EST, is 49,921, 422 cases and 797, 348 deaths, an increase of 834,582 cases and 8,984 deaths versus a week ago. At least one individual with the Omicron variant has died in the United Kingdom, said, Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Johnson, who warned of a "tidal wave" of new cases from Omicron, encouraged all eligible adults to get their booster shots and pledged to make enough doses available before the new year. California State University Channel Islands Drone Survey Dr. Sean Anderson and his students at California State University Channel Islands are conducting this survey on behalf of their ESRM 370 undergraduate class. They are studying the current use of and attitudes towards Unpiloted Aerial Vehicles. These devices are variously also known as UAV, Unpiloted Aerial Systems (UAS), Remotely Piloted Systems (RPS), or simply “drones.” While the military use of these systems may often be what people think of when they hear about this technology, we are exploring the rapidly-expanding, non-military use of systems created by hobbyists, researchers, and private industry.
