Honoring Women in Medicine September 28, 2018 Celebration of Women in Medicine 945 On Saturday, September 22nd, top female physicians from LA County enjoyed an afternoon of camaraderie, education and celebration. Dr. Stephanie Booth, Chair of LACMA's Women Physicians' Action Committee, joined by her fellow board members, Susan Bradshaw, MD, Monya De, MD, C. Freeman, MD, MBA, Karen Miotto, MD, Christine Phan, MD, Susan Reynolds, MD, Karen Sibert, MD and Heather Silverman, MD, welcomed attendees and provided an inspirational look back on the life and journey of the first African American female to earn an MD in 1864. In her keynote address, Barbara McAneny, M.D., AMA President, delivered important messages. She talked about the issues, such as costs and technological advances that, by their very nature, define today's health care. She shared the many, various ways in which women physicians continue to be treated as different from men physicians. She explained that neither men nor women, whether physicians or patients, are immune from our dysfunctional health care system. The AMA seeks solutions that identify and remove the obstacles and burdens that interfere with patient care. The AMA is working to incorporate the values of women and people of color by cultivating and empowering women and other minority physician leaders. Dr. McAneny personally anticipates these changes will influence our profession for the better. Honorees The women leaders honored at the "Celebration of Women in Medicine" Luncheon are inspiring women who demonstrate exceptional achievement and who have made impressive contributions to the medical profession. LAURA HALPIN, MD, received the "RISING STAR OF PHYSICIAN LEADERSHIP" award Recognizing a physician in training for their role as an advocate for organized medicine and their emerging leadership skills. LAURIE REYNARD, MD, received the "EXCELLENCE IN PHYSICIAN ADVOCACY" award. In recognition of significant contributions toward improving physician health and wellness to physicians in California, this award goes to an individual who displays exceptional dedication to improving the physician experience. NINA YOSHPE, MD, received the "INSPIRATIONAL LEADERSHIP IN THE PRACTICE OF MEDICINE" award. In recognition of an individual who has demonstrated outstanding leadership in the practice of medicine, this award goes to an individual who inspires dedication to the practice of medicine through creating an engaging and empowering environment. AUGUSTAVIA J. HAYDEL, ESQ., received the "EXTRAORDINARY AND INSPIRATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT" award. In recognition of the tireless work toward improving the experience of those less represented in healthcare, this award goes to an individual who demonstrates a dedication to a culture of diversity in healthcare and whose personal achievement exemplifies a model of leadership for women physicians. FREEMAN, MD, MBA, received the "ROSE TALBOT-BULLARD - WOMAN PHYSICIAN CHAMPION & TRAILBLAZER" award. In recognition of an individual who has been a champion and trailblazer for women physicians, moving past adversity to serve as a role model for future women physician leaders. EACH ATTENDEE at this year's "Celebration of Women in Medicine" helped make the event a resounding success.
